Blue Angels in the Big Sky

Gallatin Field, near Bozeman, Montana, was the stage for the Blue Angels in the Big Sky air show held July 28-29, 2007. • Kent Pietsch, now sponsored by Jelly Belly Jelly Beans, performed with his beautiful Interstate Cadet. What I consider his trademark, and probably best known act, is landing his Cadet on a pick-up truck. .
  • Kent in his Cadet taxis in atop his pick-up truck.
  • Kent's other act consists of his playing the role of a wayward aviator who aimlessly flies into the air show and has a near-miss with a performing aircraft. His cadet sheds parts—a tire, horizontal stabilizer—and after several minutes of precarious maneuvers, he manages to land his crippled plane.
  • The other aerobatic act was Jim Peitz, flying his sleek red and white Extra 300L. His performance was crisp and clean—a joy to watch.
  • Jim Pietz in his Extra 300L.
  • An added bonus was Jim racing Neal Darnell’s Flash Fire Jet Truck, a jet-powered Chevy truck. The truck won on Saturday, but I’d like to see a rematch.
  • Miles inland from any major bodies of water, the Coast Guard lived up to its Semper Paratus motto by demonstrating a hoist rescue with their HH-65 Dauphin.
  • USCG HH-65.
  • The show’s Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcon demonstration was performed by the Viper West Demo Team based at Hill AFB, UT.
  • Captain Russ Piggott in his F-16.
